Komodo for Liveaboard Cruises

Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most evocatively named destinations we visit on our snorkeling cruises, thanks to its most famous residents—the Komodo dragons. Encountering the world’s largest monitor lizard is unforgettable; they truly look like a prehistoric throwback, and their sheer size never fails to impress.

But the dragons are only part of the story. Our liveaboard cruises to Komodo and Rinca Islands offer a rich blend of dramatic landscapes, diverse wildlife, and vibrant marine life. There are plenty of opportunities for active exploration—hiking, snorkeling, kayaking—as well as time to experience the ocean-based lifestyle of the Bajau people and relax on Komodo’s iconic pink-sand beaches.

Cruising Komodo differently, away from the crowds

Cruising Komodo differently

Our decades of experience in these waters mean we navigate differently, adjusting each day to steer clear of busier spots and allowing time to truly absorb the beauty of Komodo at a more natural pace.

At anchor, our silent boats create a world of stillness, where the only sounds are the rustling of palm fronds, the gentle lapping of water against the hull, and the distant calls of seabirds.

Essential Komodo Experiences

Meet the Komodo Dragons

Join a guided walk across the varied savannah and mountain terrain of Komodo or Rinca Islands, in search of Komodo dragons and the creatures they share their home with. While the dragons are the headline attraction, the opportunity to approach buffaloes, monkeys and deer on foot is also a thrill. Plus, you’ll see and hear a great many tropical birds.

Snorkel Komodo's reefs

The warm, clear waters of the Flores Sea are home to some of Komodo’s most spectacular reefs. Snorkel over vibrant coral gardens, watching clouds of reef fish weave through sponges and soft corals, or float quietly alongside sea turtles as they graze in the shallows.

At Gili Lawa, the narrow channels and sloping reefs create ideal conditions for snorkeling. The currents bring in nutrients, drawing in large schools of fish and, at times, majestic manta rays gliding through the blue. Karang Makasar, a long, shallow reef bordered by white sandbars, is another highlight—famous for its frequent manta sightings and calm waters perfect for long, relaxed swims.

Discover pink beaches and breathtaking hiking on Padar Island

The peaks of Padar Island are a highlight of visiting Komodo, thanks to their panoramic views out across the ocean and Komodo National Park. Padar is renowned for its coloured beach sand—from above, you can look down on black, pink and white beaches, then visit them to discover the secret behind their remarkable colouration before enjoying one of Padar’s spectacular sunsets.

Visit the ‘Sea Gypsies’ of Komodo

The Bajau people have always enjoyed a deep connection with the sea. It has traditionally provided for all their needs, both material and spiritual, some of which they meet through their exceptional freediving skills. Previously nomadic, the Bajau now mainly live in villages on stilts above the water.

On a mutually respectful visit to one of these villages, you’ll learn more about their traditions and eco-friendly approach to harvesting only what they need.

Witness the flight of the Komodo bats

Each evening, the skies above the mangrove forests of Kalong Island are darkened by thousands of flying foxes as these large bats emerge to spend the night feasting on tropical fruits. This is a spectacular occurrence that offers mesmerising animal action and exceptional photographic opportunities.

Beaches, kayaks, barbecues and fun in Komodo

No Komodo liveaboard cruise is complete without time spent on its breathtaking beaches. Each day offers the chance to step onto sun-warmed sands, where rugged hills and windswept savannahs frame the shoreline.

Cool off in crystal-clear shallows, paddle through hidden coves by kayak or paddleboard, or enjoy a quiet game or relaxing yoga session on deck.

Settle into sundowners as the sky turns golden at sunset followed by freshly grilled seafood. As night falls, gaze up at a sky ablaze with stars, lulled by the rhythm of the waves as the boat rests in a secluded bay.
